Newcastle municipality on high alert following heavy rainfall

Newcastle has been submerged after exceptional heavy rains led to flooding, causing considerable damage with homes, businesses and roads severely damaged.

According to a statement issued by the Newcastlle Municipality’s Communications Department, the flash floods occurred after the South African Weather Service issued weather warnings for parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

“Mayor D.X Dube, emergency services, and the municipality disaster management unit are on the ground, assisting those affected. Assessments are underway to identify the overall number of affected houses and businesses,” read the statement.

Wards affected include Wards 6, 7, 11, 17, 21, 25, as well as businesses along Kirkland Street and the Newcastle Taxi and Bus Rank.

The municipality advises residents to be calm, stay safe, and avoid flooded areas.”

Residents are reminded that disaster management teams have invited those who have been displaced as a consequence of the floods,and are trying to find temporary housing, to report to o the Fairleigh Hall for temporary shelter.

However, there is a need for food and warm blanket donations, which may be dropped off at the hall as well as at Rubeena Jadwat Optometrists at 60 Murchison Street.
