St Dominics Newcastle wishes Dia Singh a Bon voyage as she jets off to Taiwan

Dia was one of only two South African learners that were selected for this incredible opportunity

St Dominics Newcastle’s Dia Singh will be jetting off to Taiwan to showcase her scientific brilliance at the 2023 Taiwan International Science Fair.

Dia was one of only two South African learners that were selected for this incredible opportunity, after impressing at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair with her research project.

According to a statement release from Eskom, Dia will be joined by Jaco Jacobs, a Grade 12 learner from Outeniqua High School in George.

The Taiwan fair will take place from 6 to 10 February at the National Taiwan Science Education Center in Taipei.

Dia said being chosen to participate was an honour.

“By being chosen to travel overseas for an international expo, I have already surpassed my goals. I am excited to meet other students in STEM from across the world and learn about their innovations!”

Sumaya Nassiep, Eskom’s Development Chief Executive Officer, said the following:

“Having witnessed the innovations of the two learners at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair this past December, it is vital to have our homegrown talent compete in international science fairs such as the upcoming Taiwan Science Fair, where they are able to interact with like-minded peers who are knowledgeable and skilled in engineering and innovation. This is to create awareness of the global youth innovation space and its trends, as well as to encourage networking and collaborations at an international level.”

Nassiep added that Eskom’s continued investment in the Expo was an important way to promote scientific education and interest in future careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI).

“Cultivating the next wave of innovators is an investment for our country,” said Nthato Minyuku, Eskom Group Executive: Government and Regulatory Affairs.

“With their research projects, these two learners will present novel solutions, complex engineering challenges and scientific research that resonates globally. We are truly proud to be part of creating a pipeline of innovators by means of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, our contribution to building technology, science and engineering talent in the country.”
