Grey, blue Monday as cable thieves knock out power

It is not yet clear when power will be restored

Dundee is in for a dark, grey Monday after brazen copper thieves dug up meters of cable and ripped open the relay station that offers protection to the electrical grid.

The unit, situated next to the Eskom offices adjacent to Forrestdale, was the scene of devastation this morning as police and electricians surveyed the trench dug by the thieves.

It is believed that the theft took place after 9pm on Sunday night during load shedding. It is not yet clear when the power will be restored but sources say it ‘could be hours’. Sources said only those ‘with knowledge’ could have undertaken such a crime.

Police have reported an upsurge in copper and cable theft with thieves stealing at will.
