Dumping is a health hazard… and illegal

These areas have become dumping hotspots

Masses of illegally dumped waste can still be found dotted along Alexandra and Alfred streets. From building rubble to household waste, these areas have become a hot-spot for dumping.

Estcourt Secondary School principal Marilyn Jordan Donnelly says the illegal dumping in Alexandra Street (near Estcourt Secondary Hostel) and Alfred Street (near the quarry) has become a health hazard for nearby residents.

“The smell of rotting domestic refuse and other household rubbish, as well as trash from local businesses, attracts rodents, flies and other pests. This area is also frequented by vagrants, not to mention the motorists who often park in this area for drinking and prostitution,” she commented.

Residents are reminded that if they are caught dumping illegally, the local municipality may impose a fine.
