Highlanders 2023 rugby season kicks off to a great start

The Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders have started off their official 2023 rugby season with a bang and are now 42 players strong.

Players will be led under the guidance of the following coaches:

– Head coach: Andrè ‘Swanie’ Swanepoel
– Conditioning and forwards coach: Robert Everson
– Scrum coach: Thembelihle ‘Zizi’ Yase
– Assistant coaches: Walla Fourie, Rees Wallet, Musa Ngobeni and Carel van Greunen.

Last year, 16 Highlanders represented the Gert Sibande Pumas region, seven players played in the Pumas Amateurs Team against the Lions and the Valke and a further six players represented NKZN.

Coach Swanepoel was the amateur Pumas coach, while Robert Everson was selected as the Sharks women’s team head coach as well as the Springbok under 20 forwards coach.

The Highlanders will participate in the Mpumalanga Premier League as well as in the NKZN first and second division Leagues.

This year, coach Swanepoel said they would be focusing on getting more exposure for the under 20 players as they prepare for the Regional league kick-offs.

Matches will take place as follows:
Feb. 18 – Gert Sibande VS Nkangala (Highveld)
Feb. 25 – Gert Sibande VS Ehlanzeni (Lowveld)

Friendlies matches will be as follows:
March 3 – Trials
March 10/11 – Highlanders VS Volksrust
March 16/17 – Highlanders VS Welkom
March 21 – Highlanders VS Volksrust
March 24 – Highlanders VS Middleburg (Covid Cup)
March 31 – Highlanders VS Amamzintoti
April 4 – Highlanders VS Emba
May 6 – League games begin.

This year, the Highlanders will also be celebrating their 21st birthday, with more details to follow.

Furthermore, the club has launched the ‘Buy a Player’ initiative, in which businesses are encouraged to sponsor a player’s jersey number, with the sponsoring company’s logo printed above the player’s number.
