Madadeni child rapist handed a double life sentence

Mbewu also submitted to the court the victim impact statements compiled by the girls and facilitated by court preparation officer, Masande Mdiya.

A child rapist was handed a double life sentence when the Madadeni Regional Court found him guilty of raping two girls, aged 11 and 8.

In both instances the 52-year-old man, who could not be named as it may expose the identity of the victims, used his relationship with the children’s grandmother and mother respectively in a bid to get close to his victims.

Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, regional spokesperson for the NPA said in the first instance, between 2014/15, ‘the defendant was in a relationship with the granny of the 8-year-old child when he raped her several times, threatening to harm if she reported him.’

The child eventually told her teacher and the man was arrested.

The State opposed bail which was granted.

While on bail, the suspect started a relationship with the mother of an 11-year-old girl and moved in with them.

“He raped the child repeatedly whenever they were alone and he threatened to kill her mother if she reported him. However, the child eventually told her grandmother and the man was apprehended,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

Regional Court Prosecutor, Eddie Mbewu, led the two children’s testimonies, the first reports and themedical evidence that supported the state’s case in court.

Mbewu also submitted to the court the victim impact statements compiled by the girls and facilitated by court preparation officer, Masande Mdiya.

In their statements, the children described how the rapes had affected their lives. For each of the rapes, the man was sentenced to life in prison.

The court also ruled that he was ineligible to possess a firearm and that his name be entered into the National Register of Sexual Offenders.

“The National Prosecuting Authority applauds the successful conclusion of this case and applauds the work of the Prosecution and SAPS. It is our responsibility to ensure justice for all victims of crime, particularly the most vulnerable. This sentence exemplifies the NPA’s position on child abuse,” Ramkisson-Kara concluded.
