Free diabetes testing this Saturday

Be sure to take advantage of this free life-saving service

The Lions Club of Estcourt is sponsoring free diabetes testing this coming Saturday (November 26) at Estcourt Pharmacy at the Hillside Shopping Centre, from 09:00 until noon.

Diabetes is a condition whereby the body is unable to maintain blood sugar levels within the normal range. There are two types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin. It usually starts in young people under the age of 30, including very young children and infants, and the onset is sudden and dramatic. People who have type 1 diabetes must inject insulin to survive. Insulin dosages are carefully balanced with food intake and exercise programmes.

Type 2 diabetes is caused when the insulin, which the pancreas produces, is either not enough or does not work properly. Approximately 85 to 90% of all people with diabetes are type 2, and many people who have this condition are undiagnosed.

Below is a list of some of the symptoms related to diabetes: – Excessive thirst and hunger; – Frequent urination (from urinary tract infections or kidney problems); – Weight loss or gain; – Fatigue; – Irritability; – Blurred vision; – Slow-healing wounds; and – Nausea.

Should you be experiencing any of the above symptoms, you can be tested this weekend, free of charge. Just be at Estcourt Pharmacy to take advantage of this potentially life-saving service.
