Anglers dust off their rods for what promises to be an exciting new season

The top three prizes in the non-scaled category are R10,000 for first, R5000 for second and R3000 for third.

The start of the Northern Natal Fresh Water Angling Association (NFWAA) season is a much-anticipated event for anglers who are members of clubs affiliated to this long-standing and much-respected organisation.
The association recently welcomed the newly-formed Ace Aqua Anglers to its fold, increasing the number of affiliated clubs to seven.
The first outing of the NFWAA Devland Impuphu League was held at Chelmsford Resort’s Richgate Park and as is usual at the beginning of every season, all clubs were well represented and their members eager to get the season off to a good start.
The fish, however, did not play along, which resulted in poor catches for the majority of the anglers. Nikil Pooni of Chelmsford Angling Club was the highest points scorer with a total of nine points. Kameshen Govender of Ladysmith Angling Club won the scaled fish category with a carp of 3.080kg, and Amir Pooni’s barbel of 2.3kg earned him the non-scaled prize. Both anglers received a trophy and a Devland Impuphu voucher worth R200.
Team Ladysmith fished hard and made a collective 25 points, which secured them first place.
The unpredictable Chelmsford finished second on 19 points, followed by Docrats and Itec Freespool on 10 and nine points respectively. Ace Aqua Anglers finished in fifth position, ahead of both Riverside and Endumeni, who shared sixth position. The scene is set for yet another competitive season ahead.
The NFWAA will also be hosting a grand overnight open competition at Ntshingwayo Dam (Chelmsford) on the weekend of November 26-27. There are prizes in excess of R70,000 to be won. First prize in the scaled category is a whopping R15,000, followed by R10,000 for second and R5000 for third.
The top three prizes in the non-scaled category are R10,000 for first, R5000 for second and R3000 for third.
Tickets are available at Mohamed’s Midas Newcastle and Value City.
