Curbing the carbon footprint with shady trees

10 indigenous trees were donated to plant at the Wembezi Stadium

When watching a soccer match at Wembezi Stadium, either you’re in the shade of the seating area or at the mercy of the elements along the edges of the field.

With this in mind, Themba Shabalala, a community member approached the relevant government departments and requested that trees be donated to provide a shady spot for spectators.

The trees will also reduce the community’s ‘carbon footprint’ by absorbing the carbon dioxide that contributes towards global warming.
The resident’s wish was fulfilled recently when the Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs and Department of Sport & Recreation donated 10 indigenous trees for this purpose.

The yellow wood, river bush willow and cobra trees were planted along the perimeter of Wembezi Stadium, which is a favoured spot for spectators.

Mayor Mduduzi Myeza and Speaker Simphiwe Khumalo help with the planting.

A tree-planting ceremony was attended by Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Mayor Mduduzi Myeza, Speaker Simphiwe Khumalo, Ward Councillor Madinana, as well as representatives from both departments and the local football association.
