Vigilantes are believed to have beaten and stabbed two men to death accused of robbing a taxi driver.

The men’s bodies were discovered on Monday morning by horrified commuters at the Newcastle Taxi Rank on Terminus Street.

Lizzy Arumugam, the corporate communications officer for Newcastle SAPS, said it is thought that the victims had stolen money and other belongings from a taxi driver before fleeing.

“Other drivers were told about the robbery and they in turn gave the order to find the perpetrators in Osizweni and bring them back to Newcastle so that they could be dealt with.”

Arumugam added no one has yet been detained in connection with the murders but an intensive investigation is in progress.
