Getting precious blood from ‘heroes’

Donors who have donated 50 pints of blood and upwards were recognised at the Dundee Donor Awards Ceremony.

It was a splendid occasion on Friday night as local donors were celebrated for their milestone donations by the South African National Blood Service (SANBS). Donors who have donated 50 pints of blood and upwards were recognised at the Dundee Donor Awards Ceremony.
“Donor awards and contact functions are held annually to thank both donors and contacts for their contributions in helping the SANBS to save lives,” explained donor relations practitioner Shavani Sewpaul.
She explained that donors who have reached certain milestones are acknowledged for their admirable commitment to donating blood, while contacts are recognised for their assistance in arranging blood drives at their places of employment. Sewpaul concluded by saying that the SANBS values and appreciates all its donors and contacts, and this function was a way of giving back to this amazing group of ‘heroic’ people.
Gavin Slater (61) had the highest number of donations at 175. “I am always willing to help others because, as humans, we need each other and what better way than to help each other while we are still alive,” explained Gavin.
He started donating when he was still in military school at the age of 19 and has not looked back since.
“My main purpose in life is to help those in need, as I have also donated my hair to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CanSA).” Gavin ended off by saying that he cannot stand seeing someone suffer while he has the means to help.
Elize Pieters (40) was celebrated for her 100th milestone at the event. “I can’t help these organisations financially with sponsorship, so I decided to instead save three lives at a time by donating my blood,” commented Elize. She encourages others to do their bit by also donating blood to help those who are in desperate need.
