KZN residents urged to use water sparingly as dam levels drop

Even though the South African Weather Service anticipates above average rainfall over the forthcoming summer season, the Department has emphasized the need for careful water use.

Residents in KwaZulu-Natal have been urged to continue using water cautiously because the province’s water storage capacity has decreased from 87.4% to 86.5% since last week.

Both the Nagle Dam on the Mgeni River and the Woodstock Dam on the Tugela River have gone down from 91.6% to 84.2% respectively.

The Craigie Burn, Mearns and Zaaihoek dams remain unchanged, recording 100.4%, 56.0% and 90.6% respectively.

Umgeni, the province’s primary water supply system, has also slightly declined from 96.4% last week to 95.8% this week. The system’s

Midmar Dam has had a slight drop from 93.0% to 92.6%.

Albert Falls Dam is now at 94.9% after reaching 95.1% the week before, while the Inanda and Ntshingwayo dams are 100% and 72.8%.

In the previous week, the dams recorded 101.3% and 73.4%.
