Murder suspect shot dead by police

Shots were fired and the suspect sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen

26-year-old security guard Patrick Sibiya was shot dead by police on Saturday. Sibiya was a suspect in several cases: two murders, attempted murder, and possession of a stolen firearm in Vryheid and Paulpietersburg. Earlier this month, Sibiya was guarding drone operator Navindrin Pillay at the Paddafontein railway in Paulpietersburg and when the duo didn’t report for their shift change, the security company manager enquired about their location. It was later discovered that Pillay had been murdered, as well as Sibiya’s father. Sibiya is alleged to have committed the murders. He also shot a security guard who confronted him.

On Friday afternoon last week, police were informed of Sibiya’s whereabouts in Edelpark, Vryheid. Police responded and called for backup as they searched the area between the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) offices and Engen Junction. The search continued the following morning and Sibiya was spotted running across the bypass into an open field on a local farm. Shots were fired and the suspect sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen. Ambulance personnel pronounced Sibiya dead at the scene. A 9mm pistol and .38 Special revolver were found in his possession.
