Anglers cast far and wide for victory

The inaugural fishing competition was enjoyed by dozens of anglers and their families

Wagendrift Dam was abuzz with screaming lines on August 28 during the inaugural fishing competition held by Umtshezi Angling Club in aid of the CanSA Relay, which will be held on September 3 and 4.

Competitors braved the early morning chill to get the best spots to cast in their lines and hopefully land some ‘big ones’.

Anil Sookraj, event chair of the CanSA Association – Estcourt, thanked all those who attended and supported the event.

A total amount of R7000 was raised for CanSA.

The heaviest carp of 2.14kg was caught by Owias Badrudeen. He was awarded the first place trophy, R1500 cash and a gift.

The heaviest scaly of 1.045kg was caught by Lenesh Bagothiparasdh. He was also awarded a first place trophy and R500 cash, as well as a gift.

Daryll Chinnia caught the heaviest barbell, which weighted 600g, to earn himself the first place trophy, R500 cash and a gift.

All the fish caught were safely released.

Lucky draws saw participants winning prizes ranging from key rings to vouchers.

No participant was left empty-handed.

“We would like to thank all the sponsors for their generous support and all the members who assisted, as well as the anglers who attended – without whom this day would not have been a success,” said Umtshezi Angling Club chair Avanash Lakhan.
