R15 000 bursary for fashion designer stopped

Mayor Mahaye was not happy claiming that this matter 'was very exceptional therefore Councillor should not be rigid.'

Tensions ran high at Tuesday’s Council meeting when a request for a R15 000 bursary for a local woman, Rachel Molefe, to further her studies as a fashion designer.
Councillors Bongiwe and Siphelelo Mbatha questioned this request saying they ‘need all the relevant information.’ Ms Mbatha said she did not know whether the ‘applicant is a she or a he’. Councillor Mdluli concurred saying that Councillors ‘must not just promise people… they must follow procedures’.
“If they don’t it will put Council in a bad light.
“This issue should be addressed by the bursary committee.”
Mayor Mahaye was not happy claiming that this matter ‘was very exceptional therefore Councillor should not be rigid.’
It was agreed that the R15 000 should not be approved and the matter be brought to bursary committee. It not clear when the bursary committee will meet or how urgent the request for funding was.
Ms Molefe was contacted by the Courier who said she is a professional fashion designer. She said she would comment later. She won several fashion awards at the Dundee July fashion show.
