Neglected water leaks unnerve residents

The water leaks are causing extensive road damage

Not only is Hibiscus Avenue pitted with large potholes, it is also the site of a neglected water leak.

A resident from the area told the Estcourt News that water had started to flow from a leak, suspected to be at the corner of Hibiscus Avenue and Carnation Crescent, since April.

As an immediate response, the resident (who asked not to be named) contacted uThukela District Municipality and reported the leak.

However, days turned into weeks and then months… four months… and the water leak remains. Not only is the water further destroying the already damaged road, the wastage of this precious resource is also disconcerting for the resident.

Hoping that uThukela District Municipality would publicly answer as to why the water leak has been neglected for such a long time, the resident contacted the Estcourt News.

Another water leak that has been worrying residents is at the top of Canna Avenue.

A steady flow of water has been meandering down the gutter for more than three months. Residents in the street have repeatedly reported it to uThukela District Municipality.

A large hole has formed in the road at the site of the leak and is extending as the days go by.

The district municipality’s communication manager, Jabulani Mkhonza, was alerted about the leaks and asked what the reason is for the delay in repairing them, as well as give an indication as to when the leaks would be repaired.

Mkhonza requested more ‘hours’ to collect the information, but no response was received.
