Charlestown residents left ‘high and dry’

With borehole pumps inactive and tankers absent, residents are struggling with access to water.

The residents of Charlestown are unsure when they will have running water again.

According to a representative of the community, the borehole which supplied the town’s water stopped functioning two years ago. Water tankers were dispatched to Charlestown but over the past year, this supply has also dried up.

Residents claim that power to the borehole pumps was cut off due to the Newcastle Municipality owing Eskom a significant amount of money. Municipal Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo denied this claim.

According to Khumalo, the boreholes do not have enough water available, especially during the drier winter months. As a short-term solution, he said the municipality would submit an application for funding of new boreholes.

In the meantime, residents of Charlestown fear ‘day zero’ is impending.
