Cycalive riders pass through Ladysmith

The young cyclists travel from Johannesburg to Durban

Cycalive cyclists stopped off in Ladysmith yesterday afternoon (August 16) and left again this morning.
Cycalive was launched by Torah Academy, Moletsane High and Tladi Technical in 1998. It has since been joined by Pace College, Soweto.
This is an event for Grade 11 learners of different cultural and religious backgrounds.
The pupils cycle between Johannesburg and Durban and the trip is broken up into five days, with the Ladysmith stop-over happening on day 3.
They departed Volksrust yesterday morning (August 16), passing through Newcastle before stopping off in Ladysmith.
50 learners are selected to represent the participating schools and cycle in relay from Johannesburg to Durban to promote the following goals:
· To build bridges and form bonds between young South Africans and their respective communities.
· To inspire ubuntu – optimism and commitment for the common good of a positive future in South Africa.
· To raise funds for much-needed educational projects.
· To highlight the importance of road safety and the Arrive Alive campaign, particularly relating to cyclists.
·To encourage leadership and a spirit of adventure, personal challenge and self-confidence.
Since 2010, when Cycalive was the first Mandela Day Event, it has featured prominently on the Mandela Foundation Web page.
The youngsters took time out to visit Môrester Children’s Home on Tuesday (August 16), where they handed over hampers to the children.
They left this morning (August 17), with a planned stop-over at Lions River.
