St Dominics looks to the stars

Mr Burns and the Celestron SA representatives took the approximately 750 guests on a wonderful guided journey of the universe.

Guided by the glow of the last Supermoon of 2022, families gathered under the twinkling stars on the field at St Dominics Newcastle, to enjoy an informative talk about Astronomy in the Urban Context.

The talk was presented by the renowned astrophotographer, Celestron SA brand ambassador and local conservationist, Angus Burns, in conjunction with Graham Lynch, owner of Celestron, and Frank Barbato, Technical Sales Representative.

The evening began with a get-together at the school’s Douthwaite Centre, where Burns spoke about his journey with astronomy.

In the foyer, guests could also interact with the school’s brand-new Virtual Reality system, fly a drone through an obstacle course and preview the prominent robotics programme.

Following the talk, guests made their way through the Pavilion to purchase hot chocolate, pancakes, wors rolls and other treats before settling in on the field, in front of a live projection of the Supermoon.

Burns and the Celestron SA representatives took the approximately 750 guests on a wonderful guided journey of the universe.

Here is what Burns had to say:

What an amazing turnout for this evening’s Astronomy Evening at St Dominics… Over 750 people supported the event! After my talk, we projected the rising full moon through my Celestron SE8 onto a big screen and people could also take photos with their mobile phones though a Celestron Mak90 telescope. Finally, one lucky person won the prize up for grabs… What an incredible evening!”

He congratulated St Dominics on the event and thanked Celestron SA for its support. St Dominics meanwhile thanked all its parents, learners and guests for supporting the one-of-a-kind event, its staff for working extremely hard to ensure the evening was a success, and Burns for sharing his expertise.

A very big thank you to Graham and Frank from Celestron SA for the sponsorship of the Celestron StarSense Explorer LT114AZ telescope, valued at over R7 000, which was won by lucky learner, Shweta Gangaran.”
