Trio of killers sentenced to 15 years behind bars

The men heard their fate in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court

Three men have been found guilty and sentenced to ‘hard time’ for a deadly assault that occurred in June 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 lockdown.

On June 10, 2020, a man was assaulted after being accused of stealing a cellphone in the Bhekuzulu area.

The attack was severe and resulted in fatal consequences.

The victim later died as a result of the wounds he sustained.

Police were summoned to Estcourt Hospital, where the deceased’s body was shown to them.

“A case of murder was registered and an investigation began. During the course of July 2020, five men were arrested and charged in connection with the murder. They appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court and were later released on bail,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.

Of the five accused, two were found not guilty.

Sabelo Mngomezulu (40), Sbulelo Natsu Ndumo (30) and Xabiso Mgxa Magubane (24) were found guilty of the murder. On July 12, the trio were sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment each.

The sentence was handed down in the Estcourt Regional Court.

“The investigating officer would like to thank the state public prosecutor for his guidance, as well as the community of Bhekuzulu for coming forward and assisting with information during the course of the investigation,” added W/O Khan.
