K9 Unit defuses ‘explosive’ situation

After pulling a vehicle over, SAPS found explosives and detonator stashed inside the car.

Two suspects have been arrested, after being caught transporting explosives in their vehicle recently.

Lizzy Arumugam, from Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications, explained that K9 Unit members were patrolling Albert Wessels Drive  when they received a tip-off. The lead detailed a vehicle traveling from Madadeni to Newcastle, possibly carrying explosives.

The K9 Unit was immediately on the lookout for the vehicle until they spotted it and pulled the driver off,” added Arumugam.

Upon a search of the vehicle, SAPS officials found explosives and detonators. Both occupants of the vehicle were arrested and are currently being detained.

It is not yet clear what the explosives were intended for – Arumugam said an official investigation has been launched into the incident.
