Relief for firearm owners with expired licences
The owner of the firearm is the only one who may renew a licence, hand a firearm over for destruction, or deactivate a firearm
On May 27, the Constitutional Court issued a judgment regarding expired firearm licences. A firearm licence that has previously expired is not a prohibited firearm anymore and can still be licensed. Previously, an expired firearm had to be handed in to police.
How to apply for an expired firearm licence?
· Take your firearm, together with a copy / copies of the expired licence(s) to the designated firearms officer (DFO).
· Complete the application form with supporting documents of;
– Certified copy of your current competency certificate, which is to be renewed (front and back);
– Two passport-size colour photographs (with a neutral background), not older than three months;
– Certified proof of residence;
– Two testimonials attesting to your character, with signatures;
– Fees
A storage permit will be issued and the owner of the firearm has to keep the firearm in a safe until the licence has been issued. The firearm may not be used until such licence is issued.

A firearm may not be sold without a valid firearm licence.
An expired firearm licence will be processed as a new application.
