Are stop signs just a novelty in town?

Residents have questioned the visibility of traffic officers

A number of motor vehicle accidents have happened in town recently, where motorists allegedly skipped stop signs. According to KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services area manager Frikkie Bekker, he is aware of approximately 11 crashes since the beginning of June, where the cause was allegedly skipping stop signs. Residents have questioned the visibility of traffic officers, since they say that more collisions are taking place than ever before. The Vryheid Herald enquired about the visibility of on-duty traffic officers, and AbaQulusi Local Municipality commented as follows…
“As the municipality, we have also noted a number of incidents that happen on our roads, especially at stop signs. Our traffic officers are always on the road to monitor and ensure that motorists do not break the rules of the road. Those who are found breaking the law are dealt with accordingly. In our efforts to increase public safety, we have a number of open vacancies which will be filled soon. Those vacancies have been advertised and they closed on July 8. We will be starting with the process of short-listing very soon.
“Some of these incidents that happen on our roads are more to do with driver behaviour and lack of patience than about law enforcement visibility. It is because of this that Mayor Mncedisi Maphisa always leads road safety awareness campaigns twice a year to remind motorists about the importance of following the rules of the road.”
