Liquor store patron gunned down in CBD

In a tragic case of 'wrong place, wrong time', a patron walked in on the armed robbery in progress.

What began as ‘business as usual’ ended in cold-blooded murder at a liquor store in Newcastle last Friday (July 15).

Employees and the owner of Mastajabu Liquor Store on Voortrekker Street were serving customers from behind a heavy metal mesh sheet when a group of men barged onto the premises. They drew their firearms and shouted ‘Phakamisa izandla phezulu’ (put your hands up).

One employee was ordered at gunpoint to open the security gate, and then ordered to open the till. The owner of the establishment was also forced to ’empty his pockets’.

With the armed robbery still in progress, a patron walked in. Realising what was going on, the patron attempted to flee the liquor store but during a brief scuffle, one of the robbers fired a fatal shot…

The gunmen then fled the scene after firing shots in the air to scare onlookers away.
