Government helps the youth to fight crime

This programme seeks to mobilise communities, especially the youth, to fight crime through active participation in sport.

A ‘Sport Against Crime’ programme was held at the Esigqumeni sports grounds at the end of June. The programme was put on by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Community Safety & Liaison, in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts & Culture. The department unveiled a plan last month to bring about lasting peace and stability in Ntumbane (Ward 3), under oPhongolo Local Municipality, and this initiative is in keeping with that plan.

Various sporting codes were played by the youth of Ntumbane. This programme seeks to mobilise communities, especially the youth, to fight crime through active participation in sport. It is also a vehicle for social cohesion.

Organiser Thube Vilane explained that, “The area of Ntumbane has a long history of conflict and bloodshed emanating from disputes over tribal land demarcations between the Mavuso and Sibiya tribal authority, dating as far back as 1983. These conflicts have spilled over to local schools and have disrupted the process of teaching and learning in the area, so now we are trying to stop the youth from getting involved in any of those conflicts.’’

The department also invited different chiefs from the area and unpacked law enforcement plans to deal with illegal miners at the Bosveld Mineral Mine.
