Unique hovercraft destroyed by fire

Despite speedy and determined efforts from the fire fighters, the craft was completely destroyed by the blaze

While enroute from Johannesburg to Durban today (July 14), a hovercraft (a vehicle that can travel over land, water, mud and ice) caught alight while being transported.

The vehicle and its flaming cargo came to a stop at the Loskop interchange at about 10:30 and fortunately the Umtshezi Fire Protection Association (UFPA) was on hand to speedily extinguish the blaze.

“Two vehicles were on the scene within minutes and began extinguishing the blaze. Our local fire department was also notified and responded,” said UFPA chairperson Warren Blaker.

Thanks to the Al-Imdaad Foundation, a larger vehicle was provided and with additional water and foam, the fire was quickly quelled.

“Unfortunately, despite our efforts the blaze spread very quickly with the combustible materials and the unique craft was completely destroyed in the blaze. Shout out to Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Fire and Rescue, RTI and SAPS Hilton for very quick response and support on scene,” added Mr Blaker.
