SANBS says blood stocks are running low

A significantly higher demand than usual has resulted in low reserves of group O blood.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing to all donors to assist in replenishing low blood stocks.

School closures, cold weather and a significantly higher than usual demand for blood has resulted in ‘plummeting group O blood reserves’, according to Donor Relations Practitioner, Shavani Sewpaul.

The removal of Covid-19 restrictions resulted in SANBS stock levels approaching critically low levels. We are now requesting all healthy individuals to donate a unit of blood to help those who may need it.”

Group O donors have universal blood that can be used for all patients. SANBS has planned blood drives across the country on weekdays and weekends, to help meet the demand for blood supplies.

Residents can donate at any of the following:
  • July 1 to July 30 – Bring a Buddy:

All blood donors who bring a ‘buddy’ to donate with them will receive a special token of appreciation.

  • July 1 to 30 – A pint for a pint:

Donate blood on Tuesdays between 17:00 and 18:00 and receive an ice cold beer, proudly sponsored by Checkers at the Newcastle Mall.

SANBS will also host a variety of mobile clinics throughout July:

Theku Plaza – July 3, July 9 and July 23

Boxer Super Store – July 4, July 11 and July 24

Village Walk – July 5, July 12, July 19 and July 24

Amajuba Mall – July 5, July 10, July 17 and July 30

Scott Street Mall – July 6, July 9 and July 17

Pick n Pay Pioneer Park – July 7, July 14 and July 18

Madadeni Nursing Campus – July 8

St Dominics Newcastle – July 20

Ferrum High School – July 27

Newcastle High School – July 28.

It is only possible to meet the demand with the help of donors! So please, donate blood and help save lives,” concluded Sewpaul.
