‘Cable theft is economic sabotage’

Endumeni Acting Municipal Manager Linda Hlongwane echoed these sentiments and said that residents need to report cable theft to their nearest police station.

A resident of Ward 7, whose identity is known to the Courier, alerted the newspaper that cables had been stolen from a vacant piece of land behind her property.
According to him, he was awoken by a commotion in the middle of the night during load-shedding on Wednesday last week.
Upon investigating, she saw that trenches had been dug and cables stolen. “This cable theft is really getting out of hand and the law needs to be firmer on those found with cables and copper. Thieves don’t realise that this is economic sabotage,” she said.
He added that when cables are stolen, internet access and electricity supply to households is disrupted, and telephone lines are damaged.
He concluded by saying that with load-shedding back again, residents need to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.
Endumeni Acting Municipal Manager Linda Hlongwane echoed these sentiments and said that residents need to report cable theft to their nearest police station.
“The municipality is still fighting cable theft. We are looking into scrap yards and will be shutting down those that are unlicensed. We plead with scrap yard owners not to accept illegal cables because, if there is a market, then the stealing won’t stop,” emphasised Hlongwane.
