Estcourt Methodist Church celebrates 100 years

The 100th anniversary was commemorated with a tree planting ceremony

May 25 marked 100 years since construction began on the Methodist Church building in Estcourt.

Listed as the New Wesleyan Church, Estcourt, Natal on the original plans, it was built by John Thomas Gelling, the maternal grandfather of the Hunter-Smith family in Estcourt.

The family has a close history with the building of the church, as the bricks were also made locally by their paternal grandfather, JW Smith.

The congregation celebrated this milestone with a special service the following Sunday.

The ministry, delivered by Sheryl Lane, was about hearing the voice of God. Barry Symons, the church’s faithful circuit steward, then shared some fond memories of past and present congregation members. Barry also read out a list of the many ministers who have served the church over the years.

The occasion was marked by the planting of a tree in the front garden.

In addition to the weekly Sunday service and Bible study groups, the church reaches 50-plus needy men and women at their soup kitchen, which is held every Thursday morning. The Missions group has also started donating care packages containing hygiene items, clothes and toys to children who have been sexually abused in the greater Midlands area.

No doubt, there have been many changes over the past century, but the same Word of God is still being preached today that would have been preached 100 years ago. The scripture verse in Hebrews 13:8 says: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday and today and for ever.” (King James Version).

Today’s congregation is ‘strong in the Lord and in the power of His might’ and is grateful for His faithfulness throughout the generations.

Sunday services are at 08:15 and all are welcome.
