uThukela District Municipality would once again like to bring to the attention of the community that a tender scam is doing the rounds.
Scam artists impersonate municipal officials like the municipal manager, chief financial officer or project management unit manager with the sole purpose of soliciting money from unsuspecting service providers.
They do this via emails or phone calls, which constitutes serious corruption and fraud.

As part of their modus operandi, these fraudsters pretend to be in senior management positions or occupying any other municipal positions in order to dupe their victims.
The municipality strongly condemns the baseless allegations that may arise from this particular scam and further urges anyone with information to report fraud and related incidents to the police.
“We would also like the public to take into cognizance that the municipality strictly follows official procurement processes without any direct contact with service providers or negotiations,” said uThukela District Municipality communications manager Jabulani Mkhonza.
The municipality says that all official tenders are advertised on the municipal website; e-tender portal on www.uthukela.gov.za; and newspapers (where applicable).
Service providers are therefore urged to guard against this scam and requested not to deposit any money into private bank accounts, as the municipality never charges a deposit for the award of any tender or order.
The municipality strongly condemns unscrupulous activities of this nature and encourages all service providers to refrain from entertaining requests that amount to fraud.
