Band needs a new beginning

Mo Karim has teamed up with former band member Ronnie Boysie Naidoo, and Wayne Dawson, and Inner Secrets.

Covid… Death… Let down at the last minute… Personal tragedies.
The road to fame is not paved with gold, but rather with weeds and rubble.
So discovered Dundee musician Mo Karim, whose band ‘Inner Secrets’ continues to strive to play and record original music.
Formed in 2002, Inner Secrets has undergone several personnel changes, but Mo says he “hit the music jackpot” when he recruited the youthful but talented Alberto Griffiths as lead vocalist and front-man.
After gigging around Northern KZN, Inner Secrets went on to Gauteng in 2012, where they were selected as one of 10 bands to compete in a ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition.
Their mix of rock, pop, reggae and original music so impressed the judges that Inner Secrets were declared the winners, which meant a recording contract and a chance to back up ‘Mike & the Mechanics’ at their Sun City concert. Mo is still haunted by what happened next though. A sponsor of their musical equipment pulled the plug, which scuppered what should have been their step up to national recognition.
He does not go into the specifics (“it’s too emotional,” Mo says), but the band had no option but to go back to Dundee.
There were other performances, but nothing seemed to be the same. The sudden passing of Alberto in 2017 felt like the final hammer blow. But Mo persisted, knowing deep down that he could never let his dream die and that not even the Covid-19 lockdown could dampen his spirit. There was the Gordon Franks show in Dundee and the series of Soundwaves Concerts. Mo has since teamed up with former band member Ronnie Boysie Naidoo, and Wayne Dawson, and Inner Secrets are now on the hunt for a new lead vocalist and front-man or -woman.
He calls it the ‘back to the beginning’ project.
“We need a vocalist who is fresh, energetic and keen to explore many musical genres, including original tracks.”
To test the waters, Inner Secrets will host an ‘open mic’ afternoon at Miners Rest Restaurant, Talana Museum, on Saturday, July 1, from 13:00 to 16:00.
