Girls stand united for their future

The aim of the event was to encourage girls to support each other for generations to come.

Girls stand united for their future –

The recent ‘Fierce Femme’ Girls’ Workshop, hosted at the Fairleigh Community Hall, added a new dimension to women empowerment.

The festivities started early on the Saturday morning, with about 77 girls between the ages of 10 to 19 in attendance. The excitement and eagerness of the girls was palpable, as their cheering and clapping echoed through the hall.

Among highlights of the event was a Q&A session, where the winners received small prizes for their participation. Entertainment included song and dance, inspirational poetry and several guest speakers including local resident, Maureen Kemp.

Also on the programme was a Zumba class, with two instructors on stage and the girls following their lead.

I really hope we can make a difference in these young girls’ lives,” said organiser, Maxine Dladla.

Alongside Dladla was Nozipho Moja, the Director of the non-profit organisation, the Manna Foundation, and the Adult Adviser to the Fierce Femme Girl Up Club Program, in partnership with the Southern African AIDS Information and Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS).

I wish for better education for the girls and that they are empowered to make better decisions, to change their lives and of those around them,” said Moja, who added that she wants the girls to work hard and achieve what they want, irrespective of what their circumstances are at home.

Moja explained that the aim of the program is for the girls to support each other in this generation and the ones to come.

Following the lunch break, toiletry bags were handed out, which were filled with amazing goodies kindly sponsored by the Newcastle Lions Club. Organisers of the event thanked Lions members for their contribution.

Dladla also thanked the municipality for the food packs, Ward 25 Councillor, Shandy Singh, Candice Carls from the Manna Foundation as well as all the sponsors and guest speakers.

Last but not least, a big thanks to every girl child who made the effort to attend.”
