Strike continues at AMSA despite interdict

Reports indicate that striking workers forced trucks to stop and then took away the keys.

Strike action went ahead at ArcelorMittal South Africa’s (AMSA) Newcastle Works today, despite an interim interdict from the Labour Court yesterday (May 11).

According to reports, striking workers temporarily blockaded the main road leading up to the local works (past the N11 bridge).

There were also reports that workers forced some truck drivers to exit their vehicles, before the load bins were emptied out onto the road surface. Drivers also claimed their keys were then taken away.

Newcastle Advertiser journalists have confirmed that the scene is now clear – however, the road leading up to the works is still blocked off due to two stationary trucks across the lanes.

The situation is currently quiet at other gates leading to AMSA.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
