‘All systems go’ for ultimate human race

Over the weekend, another Vryheid Athletic Club (VAC) runner qualified for the Comrades

After a two-year gap of being unable to run the ultimate human race, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has decided to increase the 15,000 entry cap for the 2022 Comrades. Race director Rowyn James said, “During the week-long first entry window period, the CMA received 11,307 entries. We are delighted to have received more than 3500 entries on the first day of the second entry window period, thereby necessitating the entry cap increase.”

James added that, “Due to the considerable enquiries and demand from our athletes, both locally and internationally, to secure an entry for this year’s ‘down run’, the CMA has decided to increase the entry cap from 15,000 to 20,000.”

James concluded that, “We understand that our runners are looking forward to running the world’s greatest foot race again after the cancellation of both the 2020 Comrades and the 2021 Centenary edition, and want to ensure that they have every opportunity to do so. We look forward to having as many runners as possible being part of this year’s Comrades ‘down run’ and have some grand plans in place to make it a truly memorable event.”

Over the weekend, another Vryheid Athletic Club (VAC) runner qualified for the Comrades. Amanda Bothma, also known as ‘the tornado’, qualified in a time of 3:53.04 in the 42km Capital City Marathon in Pietermaritzburg. She placed third in her age category and 11th in the ladies’ division. Hlobi Madida competed in the 10km race and finished in a time of 48.59. Well done to both these ladies!
