uThukela say water shortages are due to silt

The plant is currently operational but not at full capacity

Due to water shortages currently being experienced by communities that are supplied by the Ezakheni Water Treatment Works, uThukela Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala visited the plant today (April 26).

According to uThukela, it was established that the water shortages are due to the silt deposited by recent flooding that affected the main line, hindering normal water pressure and causing the pumps to trip.

Currently, only two pumps are operational. Due to this, the abstraction capacity has been greatly reduced in the water supply system.

“We now have a construction company on-site, working around the clock to remove silt that was deposited by the recent floods. They are also fixing pumps and other technical faults,” Mayor Shabalala explained.

According to a media release issued by uThukela, the plant is currently operational but not at full capacity. As a result, the repairs of the existing infrastructure will have an effect on the supply of water to the communities of Ezakheni, Acaciavale, Steadville, Chisty Place and Aloe Park. The fixing of pumps will negatively affect water supply to these communities up until Friday morning (April 29) if everything works out as planned.

“We understand the frustration this has caused and we urge the community to bear with us during these trying times,” says uThukela.

The mayor stressed that while the contractors are busy working on the pumps, they must also make sure that the community receives water.

uThukela say they will keep water tankers working in the affected areas.

The Customer Care number (0860104257) should be used to report water and sewer-related queries at all times.
