‘Drommedaris’ cycling tour to St Lucia a huge success

The group showed immense dedication and sportsmanship cycling on a weekend when the roads were extremely busy and wet from the recent rains

The ‘Drommedaris’ students of Sonop Christelike Tehuis men’s hostel from University of Pretoria passed through Vryheid over the weekend, spending the night at the Dutch Reformed Church. Their mission was to cycle from Pretoria to St Lucia to raise funds and awareness for the Beeld Children’s Fund. The group showed immense dedication and sportsmanship cycling on a weekend when the roads were extremely busy and wet from the recent rains. They were, however, well protected by cycling single file in a group, with a car in front and one behind warning motorists of the cyclists ahead. The weather conditions were also extreme, starting out very hot and ending with icy-cold rainy weather the last three days of the tour. They managed to raise over R20,000 in cash on their tour and that excludes the direct deposits into the bank account. Even though they had a hard time raising funds in Vryheid due to bad weather, the few rands they did collect at one of the intersections, they donated to a ‘beggar’ in President Street. Well done to these admirable young men. The community salutes you. Anyone still wanting to donate to Beeld Children’s Fund may still do so… Banking details are as follows: Account name – Beeld-Kinderfonds, Account number – 28401 57329, Branch code – 632 005, Reference number – your cellphone number, name and surname.
