SANBS calls for Easter goodwill

"Bad weather has severely affected our collections, so SANBS needs YOU..." - Shavani Sewpaul.

SANBS calls for Easter goodwill –

The local ‘blood bank’ will host a special blood collection drive on Saturday (April 16), from 09:00 to 14:00. SANBS’s Shavani Sewpaul hopes this will prevent blood shortages over Easter.

In a recent statement, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) said it was bracing itself for a spike in demand for blood, as families plan holidays, staycations, and pilgrimages for the Easter weekend.

The fact that SANBS has been routinely recording low collections for over six months adds to an already tough situation, according to Thandi Mosupye (Senior Manager of Marketing, Branding and Communications).

The Easter long weekend is notorious for high rates of traffic accidents, and while we hope for the best, we expect the same this year,” said Mosupye. “Unfortunately, we have fought for several months to obtain the minimum required levels of blood reserves.”

Mosupye admitted that SANBS was approaching the Easter weekend at a time when blood collection was already a challenge. In that vein, donors are encouraged to visit their nearest mobile blood drive or donor centre.

Bad weather has severely affected our collections, so SANBS needs YOU. Don’t wait – please donate,” added Sewpaul.

Donors should be in good health, be between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh more than 50kg, and live a sexually safe lifestyle. Visit www.sanbs.org.za or call 0800 11 9031 to find out where your local donor centre is.
