Vryheid police warn of latest crime trends

The ATMs at Bloemnel Centre seem to have been extensively targeted by the perpetrators of these crimes

Vryheid police have issued a warning to the community about recent scams and crime. People should exercise caution at ATMs when withdrawing money. This especially applies to older people. There is currently a trend in which bank cards and PIN codes are stolen while a person is using an ATM. The ATMs at Bloemnel Centre seem to have been extensively targeted by the perpetrators of these crimes. Another warning concerns regularly logging out when making payments by means of internet banking or a banking application on your phone. “Rather make two or three payments and then log out before making the rest. Otherwise it leaves the ‘portal’ open too long for potential fraud on the internet,” says Captain Venter. Another ‘popular’ trend is where people get charged a certain amount of money for job applications. “People are so desperate for jobs that they believe almost anything,” Captain Venter continues. There is a definite escalation in the above-mentioned crimes.
