An organisation called Babhekile Home-Based Care held a netball tournament for the youth recently, with the theme ‘Stop Gender-Based Abuse, Teenage Pregnancy and Substance Abuse’.

The tournament took place at the basketball court in Bhekuzulu, with four teams participating. The teams were Punishers from Ward 11 in the Ghetto area, Well Hol Gal from the Sasko area in Ward 8, Burn Regence from Ward 13, and Wolves from Ward 22. Organisation chairperson and tournament organiser Bright Khanyi said, “The main reason for such events is to help the youth steer clear of teenage pregnancy and substance abuse.’’

Khanyi explained that he went on Facebook to ask sponsors for donations and PR councillor Mr Shelebe offered to lend a hand. He donated a trophy and 15 medals. In the first game, Punishers beat Well Hol Gal by 24 points to four. The second game saw Punishers then taking on Burn Regence. The former team were again victorious, this time with a score-line of 27-2. The last game was between Burn Regence and the Sasko team. In this encounter, Burn Regence won by 13 points. The overall winner was the Punishers team. Khanyi thanks Cllr Shelebe for his donation and Cllr Magda Viktor for handing over the trophy.

“I would also like to thank the youth, Phumlani Thabede, Nelisiwe Nxele, radio station manager Mr Nkosi and the two broadcasters for broadcasting the games live.”
