Potholes continue to pose a hazard

"Due to heavy rain, our efforts have been futile," municipal manager

Poor roads have become synonymous with Estcourt. Not only have potholes and road damage become a frustration for motorists, but also pose a hazard out on the road and cause damage to vehicles.

Asheriff Ally, who frequents Albert Street/Loskop Road daily when travelling to work, says he witnessed a close call a few weeks back.

“The road has been in such a pathetic condition for months. While trying to avoid the potholes, a motorist nearly side-swiped my vehicle,” he related. Ally says that the condition of the road is getting ‘worse every day’.

“Traffic officers pass that road every day, I’m not sure if they are allowed to complain, but surely they can report the bad condition of the roads. They test drivers for licences on this road… how?” questions the resident.

While it was recently observed that repairs on a portion of Alfred Street had begun, there are still many hazards on this road that extend to the busy Loskop Road and industrial area.

With more and more potholes taking over the roads, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality was asked for its plan of action to remedy this.

MM responds

Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize said that pothole patching had started in some areas.

“We have been able to attend to the potholes in the Estcourt CBD and in Wembezi. Due to heavy rain, our efforts have been futile, but we have a plan to persevere toward the mitigation of all surface failures. The plan will start at all entrances to Estcourt and the CBD as a whole. As a start, we wish to attend to the CBD in the month of March, strategically so because the rain would have subsided and at least the progress that would have made will be tangible,” commented Mkhize.
