Drag racing raises funds for temple

One of the organisers, Cllr Abbas Warasally, said it was a great success

The Sri Prabhu Hanuman Temple, together with Endumeni Motorsport Club (Dundee) and Mason’s Service Centre, held the 036 CHALLENGE on Sunday (March 20) at the Ladysmith Airfield.

It was a day of dynamic drag racing, as well as ‘sound off’ and ‘show & shine’ competitions. Speed enthusiasts flocked to the airfield to soak up the excitement and thrills.

Racers and spectators attend from far and wide

The show was well attended, with people from as far afield as Pietermaritzburg, Vryheid, Estcourt, Durban, Johannesburg, Newcastle and Dundee all showing their support.

Numerous stall holders sold scrumptious goodies to snack on during the day. A favourite among the grown-ups seemed to be the ‘mutton bunnies’, while the youngsters wolfed down the waffles and doughnuts.

Trophies for the winners

All the participants who won in their respective categories received trophies. One of the winners (from Durban) said it’s all about the fun and not the winning, even though he received many trophies.

The vehicles in the ‘show & shine’ were gleaming and spotless to impress the judges.

Councillor gives thanks and praise

Cllr Abbas Warasally, who was one of the organisers, said it was a great success and that it’s been 20 years since an official drag racing show has been hosted in Ladysmith!

The event did not only benefit the drag racers, but also the stall owners. Money was certainly generated for the town.

Cllr Warasally would like to thank Endumeni Motorsport Club for their support and Alfred Duma Municipality for allowing them to use the airfield.

The councillor and many others hope to have more events like this in Ladysmith in the future.
