From small town to Eskom manager

Sibusisiwe's advice to young women is to build skills, develop confidence, break stereotypes and seize every opportunity.

From small town to Eskom manager –

Former Osizweni resident, Sibusisiwe Nkomo is living her dream, as an important part of the power generation cycle. She is currently the Unit 4 Commissioning Manager and is based at the Kusile Power Station.

Sibusisiwe is adamant about breaking free from the stereotypes of construction being a man’s world. Her responsibilities include managing, planning, organising and leading the commissioning team, and integrating all resources into each stage of a plant’s commissioning (bringing the plant into a working condition).

I oversee pre-commissioning and final commissioning work on site, as well as directing and reviewing work by internal and external maintenance/equipment manufacturer/service provider personnel, to ensure all planned testing and commissioning services are completed,” explained Sibusisiwe.

Her job also involves integrating schedule plans to reach project milestones, meeting deadlines, following health, safety and environmental regulations, and adhering to regulations governing high voltage supply, fossil fuel usage and plant safety.

Sibusisiwe’s advice to young women looking to a career in construction and engineering is to build their skills, develop confidence in their work, break stereotypes and seize every opportunity presented to them.

Be ambitious; do not compromise on the conviction that you deserve the life you dream of. Never doubt yourself and always strive for the best.”

She concluded with words from Indra Nooyi: ‘Remain a lifelong student. Don’t lose that curiosity. Whatever you do, throw yourself into it’ and Dr Benjamin E. Mays: ‘The tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goals to reach’.
