Eskom implements Stage 4 load-shedding [SCHEDULES INCLUDED]

Eskom stated that Stage 4 load-shedding will give them the space required to replenish the emergency reserves and to continue to manage the system safely.

Eskom implements Stage 4 load-shedding:

Due to further failures of generation units, Eskom announced that it would be implementing Stage 4 load-shedding from today 09:00 (March 9) until 05:00 on Friday (March 11) in order to manage the emergency reserves.

“Eskom has to inform the public, with great disappointment, that additional failures of generation units overnight have necessitated the implementation of Stage 4 load-shedding beginning at 09:00 this morning. Regrettably, this must continue until Friday 05:00. Load-shedding will then be reduced to Stage 2 until 05:00 Monday morning (March 14).”

Overnight, a unit at each of the power stations in Kendal, Duvha, Camden, and Kusile tripped. Eskom teams have since returned four units to service.

“However, these units must still ramp up to full output, necessitating heavy reliance on emergency generation reserves today. emergency reserves are being depleted faster than they can be replenished on the fourth day of extremely high diesel usage.”

The total number of breakdowns was 15 439 MW, with 5 505 MW of capacity scheduled for maintenance.

Therefore, Eskom stated that Stage 4 load-shedding will give them the space required to replenish the emergency reserves and to continue to manage the system safely.

Eskom stated it would continue to review the situation and act appropriately as circumstances changed.

“Eskom appeals to all South Africans to help us limit the impact  of load-shedding by reducing the usage of electricity and to switch off all non-essential items.”
