Fake police official arrested in Newcastle CBD –

Newcastle Detectives are investigating a case of fraud, following the arrest of a suspect masquerading as a police official.

According to a report from Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications’ Lizzy Arumugam, the suspect was arrested on Kirkland Street on the evening of February 11.

The complainant, said Arumugam, said he was walking towards the taxi rank when two unknown males approached him. Both claimed to be police officials but were in plainclothes.

They informed him that they were investigating a theft and said he needed to hand over his belongings for inspection. They then placed his belongings in a brown envelope, handed it back to him and instructed him not to open it. One of the suspects then told the complainant they would have to take him to the police station.”

At this point, the victim realised something was wrong. Fortunately, he spotted a nearby police official in uniform and called out for help.

After explaining the situation to the genuine police official, one of the suspects was arrested and taken into custody. The second suspect managed to evade arrest.

Official investigations into this matter are ongoing.
