Newcastle Mayor awards 157 bursaries to students:

The Newcastle Mayoral Bursary scheme ceremony, which is a yearly initiative, took place at the Farmer’s Hall on February 9.

Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube, was joined by Deputy Mayor, Cllr Musa Thwala, Speaker, Cllr Thengamehlo Zulu and former Amajuba District Mayor, Dr Musa Ngubane.

Students from all 34 wards were awarded registration bursaries, in order to have a shot at pursuing their dreams of attending universities and colleges.

This is according to Mlungisi Khumalo, Head of Communications for the Newcastle Municipality.

“The Mayoral Bursary Scheme covers tertiary registration fees for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, who aspire to pursue higher education,” explained Khumalo.

The 157 students received their registration bursaries to any institution of higher learning of their choice.

“They also received an appreciation letter from the mayor. This acknowledged the student’s achievement of receiving good results.”

Cllr Dube also shared words of encouragement with the recipients of the bursaries.

“As the Newcastle Municipality, we have invested in your education. I trust that each one of you will do us proud,” he said.
