ESTCOURT KZN: Learners caring for the environment

The Litter4tokens team has also expanded

It was a great day for the learners and educators at Riverdale Primary School in September last year, when a Litter4tokens kiosk was finally delivered to the school in Rensburgdrift.

In April 2019, educator and Girl Guide leader Deborah Gamede and the learners were involved in a beach clean-up and the Litter4tokens idea was introduced to them.

Basically, learners collect different types of litter, which they often find in their neighbourhoods, streets and around the school.

The litter is then sorted, bagged and a record is kept. The learners receive R5 for each bag of litter, which they can use to purchase toys, clothes and even food items.

Collecting litter, while keeping the environment clean, has become a way of life for the learners at Riverdale Primary School.

Since then, the children have been busy collecting litter and were glad when the Litter4tokens kiosk arrived at the school.

“The kiosk makes things easier for us recyclers, since we now have space to put our recycling in until the right time when we take it to our local waste collection point. My Litter4tokens team really enjoy bringing and packing recyclable trash into the kiosk,” commented Gamede.

The Litter4tokens team has also expanded, and learners from Kopleegte Primary have also joined in.

“This expansion really excites me as the Litter4tokens director in the Ukhahlamba Region, because it encourages children to keep their environment clean.

“At the same time, they are taught about the hygienic way of living.

” Washing of hands is emphasised after picking up litter, while sorting it and the packing of items is a skill that is instilled. We are still looking for more schools to join our project so that the ‘do not litter’ and ‘keep our environment clean’ gospel will be preached everywhere,” added Gamede.
