‘Fatman’ steamrolls the crowd with his unique voice

It was during one of his ‘gigs’ that ex Gladiator, Garth Collins called him ‘Fatman’

From the word ‘go’ one could see that ‘Fatman’s’ show is going to be next level. Anticipation brewed when lights, smoke and dramatic music introduced ‘Fatman’ on stage while the crowd went wild. ‘Fatman’ is a well-known name in the music industry and is signed by Universal Music. In 2017, Fatman (also known as Johan Brummer) took the chance and entered ‘The Voice’ where he sang a duet with Caroline Grace. Even though he didn’t win the competition, he was noticed by several music labels which make him the most successful artist in the three seasons of ‘The Voice’.

Johan grew up in a small town and at a young age he already performed weekly at a local restaurant to generate some pocket money. After school, he went on to study music but he never stopped performing. It was during one of his ‘gigs’ that ex Gladiator, Garth Collins called him ‘Fatman’ and the name just stuck as a stage name. ‘Fatman’ has a very unique voice which enables him to sing an array of different genres. What makes his shows so adrenalin pumped is the fact that he performs with an abundance of energy sewn together with his witty sense of humour. This in its own had the crowd clapping and screaming with laughter in enjoyment. ‘Fatman’s’ first single called ‘Boom Baby’ was released after ‘The Voice’ but his other songs ‘Dorp toe’ and ‘SOS’ are the two that became a household name in Afrikaans homes. He admits that ‘Dorp toe’ is the song that will be remembered long after he is in his grave and what people will associate him with.

Furthermore, he says that Elvis has been his biggest role model since he can remember and he even sings a few cover songs of this music legend as well. “It is 80% hard work and 20% talent that get you to the top,” is his advice to young and upcoming musicians. He never sat back and waited for opportunities to fall in his lap, he went out and made sure that he was seen because he believes that the more exposure you get, the more opportunities will come your way (even if it is only singing in a bar). He recently released his new single called ‘Kamp Kommandant’ that is quickly turning into a firm favourite at his live shows. It was indeed a privilege to have him perform at the Skiboat Club in Vryheid.
