New uThukela leaders meet police stakeholders

The main purpose of the meeting was for the SAPS to meet the newly-elected mayor and his executive committee

uThukela Mayor Inkosi Shabalala had a ‘meet-and-greet’ with uThukela District police recently. The engagement was held at the Department of Public Works offices in Ladysmith.

Mayor Shabalala was accompanied by EXCO members Cllr M Khoza, Cllr N Mchunu, Alfred Duma’s Cllr Warasally and the manager of the Mayor’s Office, Mr SO Mnguni.

The uThukela District SAPS office is based in Ladysmith and is currently housed at Ladysmith police station. About 16 police stations fall under the uThukela District.

Meeting the mayor and EXCO

Brigadier Francis Bantham stated that the main purpose of the meeting was for the SAPS members to meet the newly-elected mayor and his executive committee.

“The SAPS plays a vital role in society, which is to ensure the safety of all South African citizens. For that specific reason, it is imperative for the police to have a good working relationship with the district leadership,” said Brigadier Bantham.

The brigadier gave a detailed description of the SAPS structure and its profile. She also introduced the station commanders who serve at the 16 police stations that fall under uThukela District.

Mayor gives his support

Speaking at the engagement, Mayor Shabalala said, “Being here is important to me. I appreciate this meeting with the SAPS. We are prepared to have a good working relationship and protect you as well.”

The mayor added that, “We are mandated to protect our communities. The involvement of leadership and police is vital to maintain peace and stability in our communities.”
