Last week Friday, the Vryheid Herald attended a ceremony where the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Kwazi Mshengu, announced the matric results in KZN ‘virtually’ at Hoërskool Pionier, along with representatives from the Basic Education Department in the Zululand district.

The MEC was accompanied by KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala and eThekweni Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda. Mshengu described the class of 2021 as the most resilient learners, as they lost a lot of time being at home due to Covid-19 in the previous year (Grade 11). Mshengu applauded the ‘girl child’ for obtaining a 77.1% pass rate, while the ‘boy child’ obtained 76.1%, and said it is time now for girls to shine, unlike in the past when girls were denied education. “We all must work together to ensure that all KZN children receive quality education.”

Premier Zikalala saluted the educators for committing themselves and also ensuring that the children adhere to all Covid-19 protocols. He said the class of 2021 faced trauma and disturbances, as 144 schools were damaged due to the unrest.
