What to do with unwanted presents?

Donate it, exchange it or sell it online

Christmas is not only about presents, but they do exchange hands… Sometimes you put on your biggest smile and say, “You shouldn’t have”. And you mean every word, quite literally, because you don’t like the gift you have received.

What do you do if you receive gifts you already have or things you do not need? Here are some ideas on what to do with an unwanted gift:

Donate it – For starters, if your gift can in any way be useful to someone in need, you could donate it to someone who will use it.

Exchange or return it to the store – If the kind recipient was thoughtful enough to include a gift receipt, use the opportunity to trade the present in for an item you actually want or get a refund.

Sell it online – You can sell your unwanted gift online, which might be quicker for you to get cash easier and faster.

Re-gift it – You can also give the present to someone else, IF you follow re-gifting rules! These include making sure you aren’t giving the gift back to the person who gave it to you, and that you’re thinking about the recipient and not giving another unwanted gift. If the gift isn’t Christmas-themed, you can perhaps give it as a thank-you present at a New Year party, if it’s appropriate.
